Call to Worship:  Sing to our God a new song. God has done marvelous things! Make a joyful noise to the Lord! Break forth into joyous song and sing praises. Let the sea roar and all that fills it. Let the world and its people sing together for joy!

Hymn:  How Firm a Foundation  (vv. 1,2,3,5)   click here

Call to Confession:  If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Trusting in God’s mercy, let us confess our sin.

Prayer of Confession:  Loving God, we have not loved you or each other with our whole hearts. Forgive us, we pray, and lead us toward wholeness, that we may be filled with your joy. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.  (Please take a moment for silent confession.)

Assurance of Forgiveness:  Christ loves us so much that he laid down his life for us and calls us his friends. If we can forgive our friends, how much more does Christ forgive us!. Friends, believe the Good News! In Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

We Hear God’s Word

Time with Young Disciples: After watching the message from Ms. Cathy, share any experiences you have had as part of a team. Were there special jobs for each person? How did you share the work that needed to be done? Have there been times when you have taken turns? Then, talk about Jesus' words, that we are all to be his witnesses. What does that mean? How can we be witnesses for Jesus and for the good news of love and forgiveness?

Click here to access the children's materials for your family, including some coloring bulletins and a video. Because these materials are copyrighted, you will need to enter the user ID and password included in the congregation email. After watching the video, talk about why this film showed so many different parts of Jesus' story? How can a movie like this remind us about Jesus' life and the way we can be witnesses about it?

Scripture Prayer:  Open our eyes and soften our hearts, O God, through the work of your Holy Spirit, that in the hearing of your Word we may receive new life. Amen.

Mark 4:10-20  10 When he was alone, those who were around him along with the twelve asked him about the parables.  11 And he said to them, "To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables;  12 in order that 'they may indeed look, but not perceive, and may indeed listen, but not understand; so that they may not turn again and be forgiven.'"  13 And he said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the parables?  14 The sower sows the word.  15 These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them.  16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy.  17 But they have no root, and endure only for a while; then, when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.  18 And others are those sown among the thorns: these are the ones who hear the word,  19 but the cares of the world, and the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it yields nothing.  20 And these are the ones sown on the good soil: they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold."

The Eucharist
At Shepherd of the Sierra, the Gifts of God really are free, as Jesus gives us his life even when we do not know him. The table is completely open, and all are invited to take the bread and the cup regardless of age, race, creed or any other arbitrary human division. As Jesus freely welcomed sinners and gave communion to the ones who betrayed him, denied him, and deserted him, and because the scriptures say, “Nothing can separate us from the love of God,” this table is especially open to those who are aware of their own brokenness. Like Jesus, we exclude no one.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
