Shepherd of the Sierra Presbyterian Church
2nd Sunday of Easter
April 11, 2021

Welcome to Worship! We invite you to join with those in your home – or in spirit with others from Shepherd – and worship God this day. (If you experience any trouble accessing this material, including links, please send feedback to Cathy Lovejoy at children@shepherdpres.org.)

We will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper this morning.  If you wish to join us, please gather bread and juice before you begin this service.

Call to Worship: Peace be with you. How good and pleasant it is when we live together in unity. Receive the Holy Spirit. It is like precious oil on the head, the blessing of the Lord.

Hymn:  Christ Is Alive!  (vv. 1,2,4,5)   click here

Call to Confession:  If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Trusting in God’s mercy, let us confess our sin.

Prayer of Confession:  You have shown yourself to us, O God, by Word and Spirit, with signs and wonders, in flesh and blood, yet we still struggle to live and believe the good news of Jesus Christ. Have mercy on us; forgive us. Enter into our lives and cast out our fear so that we may come to trust in you and have life in Jesus’ name. Amen.  (Please take a moment for silent confession.)

Assurance of Forgiveness:  We have an advocate with God – Jesus Christ, the righteous one – who offered his life in love to save the world from sin.  Friends, believe the Good News! In Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

We Hear God’s Word

Time with Young Disciples: After watching the message from Ms. Cathy, talk about something in your life that you have anticipated. What was it? Why were you looking forward to it? How did you feel after it was over? Then, talk about the idea of Easter being a season. How does living in a season of Easter change the way we view this event in the life of our faith? What, then, does it mean to be Easter People?

Click here to access the children's materials for your family, including some coloring bulletins and a video. Because these materials are copyrighted, you will need to enter the user ID and password included in the congregation email. After watching the video, talk about the Easter story together. Why is it important to remember this story, over and over again, and not just on one day?

Scripture Prayer:  Open our eyes and soften our hearts, O God, through the work of your Holy Spirit, that in the hearing of your Word we may receive new life.  Amen.

Mark 3:19b-30   Then he went home; 20 and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. 21 When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, "He has gone out of his mind."  22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, "He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons."  23 And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan?  24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.  25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.  26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come.  27 But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered.  28 "Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter;  29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin" ?  30 for they had said, "He has an unclean spirit."

The Eucharist

At Shepherd of the Sierra, the Gifts of God really are free, as Jesus gives us his life even when we do not know him. The table is completely open, and all are invited to take the bread and the cup regardless of age, race, creed or any other arbitrary human division. As Jesus freely welcomed sinners and gave communion to the ones who betrayed him, denied him, and deserted him, and because the scriptures say, “Nothing can separate us from the love of God,” this table is especially open to those who are aware of their own brokenness. Like Jesus, we exclude no one.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
