October 18 Virtual Worship
Shepherd of the Sierra Presbyterian Church
October 18, 2020
20th Sunday after Pentecost

Welcome to Worship! We invite you to join with those in your home – or in spirit with others from Shepherd – and worship God this day. You are invited to use as little or as much of these resources as you like. (If you experience any trouble accessing this material, including links, please send feedback to Cathy Lovejoy at children@shepherdpres.org.)

We will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper this morning.  If you wish to join us, please gather bread and juice before you begin this service.

Call to Worship: Sing to the Lord and bless God’s name. Tell of God’s saving power from day to day. Worship the Lord in holy splendor. Tremble before God, all the earth.

Call to Confession: Let us boldly confess our sin before the One who already knows our errors and is gracious to forgive our hidden faults.

Prayer of Confession: Lord God, only you are holy. Yet we imagine that we are righteous, excusing our own faults while pointing out those of others. We are quick to lay burdens upon our neighbors but slow to help with their own. We take credit and give blame. In spite of the grace you have shown to us, we are slow to show mercy. Forgive us, O God, and wash us clean, that we may serve you with joy and thanksgiving. Amen. (Please take a moment for silent confession.)

Assurance of Forgiveness: Sisters and brothers, God has made a way where there was no way. In Christ Jesus evil and death have been vanquished, and we live in a state of grace.  Friends, believe the Good News! In Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Time with Young Disciples: After watching the message from Ms. Cathy, talk about the many parts of life that are not especially difficult for you — eating, getting water, bathing, and having a place to live. Then, talk about what life would be like if any of those activities became very difficult. How would you feel? Where might you seek help?

Click here to access the children's materials for your family, including some images to download to make a CROP Walk sign and some coloring bulletins. Because these materials are copyrighted, you will need to enter the user ID and password included in the Friday email.  Make a sign for the CROP Walk, as well as a plan for how your family might walk together and remember the suffering of others, and God's presence with all. What are some of the ways we can remember and care for the people who struggle with food or water insecurity?

Scripture Prayer:   God of all wisdom, give us your Word and send us your Spirit so that we may know Christ. Amen.

Exodus 33:12-23   12 Moses said to the LORD, "See, you have said to me, 'Bring up this people'; but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, 'I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.'  13 Now if I have found favor in your sight, show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people."  14 He said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."  15 And he said to him, "If your presence will not go, do not carry us up from here.  16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people, unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and your people, from every people on the face of the earth."  17 The LORD said to Moses, "I will do the very thing that you have asked; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name."  18 Moses said, "Show me your glory, I pray."  19 And he said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, 'The LORD'; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.  20 But," he said, "you cannot see my face; for no one shall see me and live."  21 And the LORD continued, "See, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock;  22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by;  23 then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen."

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
