We will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper this morning.  If you wish to join us, please gather bread and juice before you begin this service.

Call to Worship:
From God comes my salvation. For God alone my soul waits in silence. God alone is my rock and my salvation. God is my fortress; I shall never be shaken.

Call to Confession:  Trusting in the promise of grace, let us pour out our hearts before God.

Prayer of Confession:  Forgiving God, we repent of all the ways we turn from you. You call, but we do not listen; you show us your path, but we prefer our own way. Forgive us, heal us, and lead us back to you, that we might show mercy to others. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.   (Please take a moment for silent confession.)

Assurance of Forgiveness:  This is the word of the Lord: in Jesus Christ, you are forgiven by God and given new life. Friends, believe the Good News! In Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

We Hear God’s Word

Time with Young Disciples: After watching the message from Ms. Cathy, talk about those times in your life when you have felt discouraged, sad, or overwhelmed. Did you tell God about your struggles? Even if you did not, God was with you! What are some of the ways you can feel God's love and encouragement as you overcome trouble?

Click here to access the children's materials for your family, including a video of our scripture story and some coloring bulletins. Because these materials are copyrighted, you will need to enter the user ID and password included in the congregation email.  After watching the video, talk about the way that Jesus had "authority." Having authority means that others listen to you. Who listened to Jesus that day?

Scripture Prayer:  Speak to us your word, O God, that we may hear Jesus' call to be his disciples. Amen.

Mark 1:21-28  21 They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught.  22 They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  23 Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit,  24 and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God."  25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!"  26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him.  27 They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, "What is this? A new teaching -- with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him."  28 At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

The Eucharist
At Shepherd of the Sierra, the Gifts of God really are free, as Jesus gives us his life even when we do not know him. The table is completely open, and all are invited to take the bread and the cup regardless of age, race, creed or any other arbitrary human division. As Jesus freely welcomed sinners and gave communion to the ones who betrayed him, denied him, and deserted him, and because the scriptures say, “Nothing can separate us from the love of God,” this table is especially open to those who are aware of their own brokenness. Like Jesus, we exclude no one.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
