Baptism of the Lord
January 10, 2021

Welcome to Worship! We invite you to join with those in your home – or in spirit with others from Shepherd – and worship God this day. (If you experience any trouble accessing this material, including links, please send feedback to Cathy Lovejoy at children@shepherdpres.org.)

We will be celebrating the Lord’s Supper this morning.  If you wish to join us, please gather bread and juice before you begin this service.

Call to Worship:  In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The Spirit of God swept over the face of the waters; then God said: Let there be light, and God saw that it was good. At the beginning of his ministry, Jesus was baptized by John. The heavens opened, and the Spirit descended like a dove; then God said: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Call to Confession:  Jesus our Lord came into an indifferent world, yet his life revealed the inner thoughts of many. Let us confess our sins before God and one another that we may receive release from our sin.

Prayer of Confession:  God of all glory, you look from heaven and see us as we are – not worthy to kneel at your feet, not ready to welcome your way. Forgive us, gracious God. In Christ, stoop down to save us; loosen the ties that bind us to sin and set us free to love and serve you; in Jesus’ name. Amen.  (Please take a moment for silent confession.)

Assurance of Forgiveness:  Hear the good news of the gospel: As a voice from heaven said to Jesus, so God says to each of us: You are my beloved child, and with you I am well pleased. Friends, believe the Good News! In Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

We Hear God’s Word

Time with Young Disciples: After watching the message from Ms. Cathy, share your family memories of baptism. Who was there? Do you remember it? Do you have any pictures from it? Talk about the ways that baptism can be like a new beginning in your life. How does remembering our baptism, or sharing others' memories of it, help us to live each day as a new beginning in our lives of faith?

Click here to access the children's materials for your family, including a video of our scripture story and some coloring bulletins. Because these materials are copyrighted, you will need to enter the user ID and password included in the congregation email.  After watching the video, read together three different versions of this story from our Gospel writers: Mark 1:1-11, Matthew 3:1-17, and Luke 3:1-22. What do you notice about each retelling of this event? In what ways did John prepare us to follow Jesus?

Scripture Prayer:  Shine upon us, God of glory, and by your Spirit reveal to us the grace and truth of Jesus Christ, your Word made flesh. Amen.

Mark 1:9-15   9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him.  11 And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."  12 And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.  13 He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.  14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God,  15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news."

The Eucharist

At Shepherd of the Sierra, the Gifts of God really are free, as Jesus gives us his life even when we do not know him. The table is completely open, and all are invited to take the bread and the cup regardless of age, race, creed or any other arbitrary human division. As Jesus freely welcomed sinners and gave communion to the ones who betrayed him, denied him, and deserted him, and because the scriptures say, “Nothing can separate us from the love of God,” this table is especially open to those who are aware of their own brokenness. Like Jesus, we exclude no one.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
