Shepherd of the Sierra Presbyterian Church

  September 27, 2020       17th Sunday after Pentecost

Welcome to Worship! We invite you to join with those in your home – or in spirit with others from Shepherd – and worship God this day. You are invited to use as little or as much of these resources as you like. (If you experience any trouble accessing this material, including links, please send feedback to Cathy Lovejoy at children@shepherdpres.org.)

Call to Worship:  Praise the Lord who is our provider.  God brought us out of bondage and has made us free. Glorious are the deeds of our God, and mighty are his acts. The Lord is our hope. Our trust is in God.

Hymn:  Be Still (Psalm 46)   click here

Call to Confession:  As loving parents have compassion for their children, God has compassion for us. Confident in God’s love, let us confess our sins.

Prayer of Confession:  Righteous God, we confess that we have not lived as your obedient children. We have honored you with our words, but we have denied you with our actions. We have not pursued the mind of Christ, who took the form of a servant, for we have acted with selfish ambition. We have put our interests before the interests of others and have not regarded them in humility. Forgive us our arrogance, awaken our hearts to sincere repentance, and enable us to will and to work for your good pleasure, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.  (Please take a moment for silent confession.)

Assurance of Forgiveness:  Brothers and sisters, God offers forgiveness of our sin and abundant life to those who repent. Turn, then, and live in Christ, our Lord. Friends, believe the Good News! In Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Time with Young Disciples: After watching the message from Ms. Cathy, talk about some of the things you have said you will do, even though it was hard. Were you able to follow through? How did it feel if you were not able to do so? How did it feel if you were able to do so? Do you think it is easy or hard to trust Jesus and to follow him and do God's will? Why?

Click here to access the children's materials for your family, including a video about the parable of the two sons and some coloring bulletins. Because these materials are copyrighted, you will need to enter the user ID and password included in the Friday email. After viewing the video, talk about Jesus' story and act it out as a family. How do you think Jesus' audience felt when they heard this story from Jesus? What do you think they thought about?

Scripture Prayer:  Lord, by the power of your Holy Spirit open our understanding that we may receive the Word of life. Amen.

Matthew 21:23-32  23 When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?"  24 Jesus said to them, "I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.  25 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?" And they argued with one another, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?'  26 But if we say, 'Of human origin,' we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet."  27 So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.  28 "What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.'  29 He answered, 'I will not'; but later he changed his mind and went.  30 The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, 'I go, sir'; but he did not go.  31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you.  32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
