Shepherd of the Sierra Presbyterian Church

September 13, 2020   15th Sunday after Pentecost

Welcome to Worship! We invite you to join with those in your home – or in spirit with others from Shepherd – and worship God this day. You are invited to use as little or as much of these resources as you like. (If you experience any trouble accessing this material, including links, please send feedback to Cathy Lovejoy at children@shepherdpres.org.)

Call to Worship:  People of God, bless the Lord, bless God’s holy name. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is God’s steadfast love for us.

Hymn:  Open the Eyes of My Heart   click here

Call to Confession:  As loving parents have compassion for their children, God has compassion for us. Confident in God’s love, let us confess our sins.

Prayer of Confession:  Loving God, we confess that we have failed to live in harmony with our sisters and brothers. We have been self-righteous in our attitudes, closed-minded in our beliefs, and judgmental in our opinions. We have shunned those whose ways we do not understand, and we have despised those who do not endorse our convictions. Forgive our sins of discord and conceit, and heal our divisiveness and quarreling. Help us to be charitable in our regard for others that we may dwell in peace with Christ, who is Lord of all. Amen. (Please take a moment for silent confession.)

Assurance of Forgiveness:  The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Friends, believe the Good News! In Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Time with Young Disciples: After watching the message from Ms. Cathy, talk about some of the ways that people often judge others. What does it feel like to be judged by someone else? What are some things we can think about or remember when we start to feel judgmental of another?

Click here to access the children's materials for your family, including a video about one of Jesus' parables, and some bulletins. Because these materials are copyrighted, you will need to enter the user ID and password included in the Friday email.  After viewing the video, talk about the ways it is sometimes difficult to forgive others. What does it feel like to be forgiven? How does forgiving others help us to walk in Jesus' ways?

Scripture Prayer:  Lord, by the power of your Holy Spirit open our understanding that we may receive the Word of life. Amen.

Romans 14:1-12  Welcome those who are weak in faith, but not for the purpose of quarreling over opinions.  2 Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables.  3 Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgment on those who eat; for God has welcomed them.  4 Who are you to pass judgment on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord1 is able to make them stand.  5 Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds.  6 Those who observe the day, observe it in honor of the Lord. Also those who eat, eat in honor of the Lord, since they give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honor of the Lord and give thanks to God.  7 We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves.  8 If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.  9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.  10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother or sister? Or     you, why do you despise your brother or sister?  For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.  11 For it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall give praise to God."  12 So then, each of us will be accountable to God.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
