Call to Worship: O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples.  Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wonderful works. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually. Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered, O offspring of his servant Abraham, children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

Call to Confession: Sisters and brothers, God never forgets God’s promises; God’s covenant endures in each new generation. We are free to speak the truth about our lives because God’s faithfulness embraces us as we examine our hearts.

Prayer of Confession: God of mystery, God of life, we imagine that we are capable judges of power and wisdom and goodness. We trust our own standards; we separate and categorize; we mark the performance of others. We fail to trust your power, hidden in all things. We fail to watch for you, working out your purposes. Gracious God, hidden and manifest, transform our withered imaginations until we yield the judgments we trust to a love we cannot control. Amen.   (Please take a moment for silent confession.)

Assurance of Forgiveness: What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? Sisters and brothers, nothing we have done, nothing we will ever do, is enough to separate us from the love of God made known in Jesus Christ.  Friends, believe the Good News! In Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Time with Young Disciples:  After watching the message from Ms. Cathy, talk about some of the things you worry about -- your "whatifs." Then, talk about these words from Romans 8:38-39: "I am sure that nothing can separate us from God’s love—not life or death, not angels or spirits, not the present or the future, and not powers above or powers below. Nothing in all creation can separate us from God’s love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord!" (CEV). How can you use these words as comfort when you are having worries or when you struggle?

Click here to access the children's materials for your family, including a video about Jacob, Leah and Rachel, and some worship bulletins. Because these materials are copyrighted, you will need to enter the user ID and password included in the Friday email. After watching the video, talk about the way that Jacob was treated poorly by Laban, and ultimately tricked. How do you think Jacob might have felt? What do you think might happen next?

Scripture Prayer: Enlightening God, the unfolding of your Word gives light and provides wisdom to all who seek your truth. Open our minds and hearts by the presence of your Holy Spirit, that the mystery of your heavenly realm is made evident here on earth. Amen.

Romans 8:26-39  26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.  27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.  28 We know that all things work together for good1 for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.  29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family.  30 And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.  31 What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?  32 He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else?  33 Who will bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.  34 Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.  35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  36 As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered."  37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.  38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,  39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Sending:  Take heart; have no fear; live by faith. Dare to respond to the invitation of Jesus Christ. We believe God remembers us and saves us. We want to follow where Jesus leads. There are signs of God’s presence on every hand; there is evidence of God’s favor all around us. God is with us at the morning watch; God is present in the darkest night. Live with gladness in a nation richly blessed. Live with generosity for the sake of all people. We will remember the abundance of God’s love. We will share the heritage we have received.
