Book in Common

Book In Common
This year we are trying something new at Shepherd called a Book in Common - an invitational shared read that tells a good story, but is also designed to promote understanding and discussion of an issue facing the broader community. A small committee reviewed some recent books and chose one that was relatively accessible to all types of readers, was inspiring and insightful, and provided good fodder for discussion within our faith community. You can use it in your book club or small group, or just read it on your own.
The book we chose is Well by Sarah Thebarge, a Yale-trained physician’s assistant with a deep spiritual calling to do medical work in Africa. Her story recounts the physical and mental hardship she witnessed and endured, while wondering what would happen if instead of asking why God allows suffering to happen in the world, we asked “Why do we?”

Throughout the program year we will have various resources and activities related to the book. We can’t promise that everyone will love this book, but you never know – you might end up talking to someone you don’t know at SOS just because you read it!
