Serving Children Birth through Grade 6
Child Protection — Shepherd of the Sierra is called to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all children and youth in our care. With this in mind, we have implemented a process to train and screen all leaders, volunteers and staff serving among our youth and children. For each adult, we check personal references and complete criminal background checks. Additionally, all adults receive training and must adhere to all policies and procedures outlined in Shepherd's Safe Conduct Policy.
Nursery — While children are welcome in worship at Shepherd of the Sierra, we also provide parents with the option of using the nursery. Staffed by screened and trained providers, the nursery is available for children birth through age three. While in the nursery, children engage in active play and hear stories of our faith. Parents receive pagers should their children need them during worship. (Nursery is located in Bldg. C - Youth & Children's Center.)
Worship — Children are invited to attend worship with their parents. In worship, children will find special activities and materials to help them learn about and experience what it means to be a part of a worshipping community. Children enjoy special worship bulletins, a Time with Young Disciples, and quiet activities and experiences in the children's worship corner during the pastor's sermon. On occasion, children are escorted from worship during the sermon to participate in special activities or experiences.
Formation & Education — Formation & Education time is suspended during the summer months when we have one worship service at 10 a.m. From September to May at 9:45 am on Sundays, children gather to worship, hear stories of our Christian faith, share their faith questions, and participate in a number of craft and activity centers.
Music Opportunities — On occasion, our children work together with our Director of Music, Julie Adams, to prepare and present a special musical anthem in worship. Rehearsals are held periodically during our Formation & Education time.
Story Share — Periodically throughout the year our families with children in the home are invited to explore our story bags, take one home for the week and consider the ways that we can see God's love in some funny, ordinary and extraordinary books. After reading the book, exchange it for a new one using our children's lending library the next time you are at church.
Summer Fun — Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy God's creation. The youth and children of Shepherd have many wonderful opportunities to do this together. All children and youth entering grades 2-12 are invited to attend summer camp at Westminster Woods each summer. This Presbyterian Camp, nestled in the redwoods, provides many different faith-enriching experiences - from hikes, crafts, creek walks, ropes courses, songs, and more. The Woods is one camp you don't want to miss.
Children also have the opportunity to attend summer events close to home. Each summer, several events are offered for children and their families to enjoy. Summer ministries may include Vacation Bible School, Beach Blast at Folsom Lake, or Poolapalooza Pool Parties.
